Ode to the Long Island Honkers
To all the drivers who speak with their horn,
Late at night or early morn;
Mid-day or in the rush hour mess,
Your frantic beeping lacks finesse.
In the South I have been accustomed to,
Billy-Bob or Esther Sue,
Honking to say “howdy” from across the way,
An embarrassing gesture, (to me anyway). (more…)
Long Island is known for many things, but what you may not know are the people and places that have become famous from LI. Besides Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, Jerry Seinfeld, the Baldwins, and Lindsay Lohan, there are many other famous faces and places near your hometown. Here’s our Top 10: (more…)
My first week at my new job was fabulous! Of course there is that overwhelming feeling when beginning a new job, but I find that I take in more than just learning my duties when I am around these people here in their everyday setting. They go about their habits and conversations as normal and they have no idea that each move they make, each catch phrase they use- is being observed by a Southerner as if she landed in outer space. Only instead of little green men or alien monsters, I see very friendly people that just have different habits than I am used to.
One phrase I have heard from different people is “Oy Vey” when someone is tired or exasperated. It is actually Yiddish, meaning “Oh Woe. Most of the people on Long Island speak well but a few people have a thicker accent and will add an “R” in a word that ends with an “ah” or an “aw” sound; Cheetahr, Hallelujahr, Sawr, Coleslawr, Drawr… (more…)
“Read the directions and directly you will be directed in the right direction.”
“I simply must get through!” (Alice)
“Sorry, you’re much too big. Simply impassible.” (Doorknob)
“You mean impossible?”
“No, impassible. Nothing’s impossible.”
After some months of living on Long Island, I finally am employed. I began my new job right after the July fourth holiday. It is a wonderful place to be and everyone I have met seems happy to be there. The place is open and spacious (…and I drool when I say this — ORGANIZED!). It’s called Kidz Therapy and it is located in Garden City, N.Y. (more…)
There is no doubt about it: Long Islanders have a unique perspective, a unique attitude, and a unique approach to their daily lives. So how hard would it be to move here and adapt to our beautiful land, traffic, raccoons, personalities, and way of life? What do people think when they visit here for the first time? Enter Jen Jeffrey, a southerner from Chattanooga, Tennessee who moved to Long Island a short time ago. In this and many up-coming postings, she will give all of us a view into her perspective as a Long Islander as she appreciates and adjusts to life here. No, there won’t be any shocking, “Wow, they have buildings here” entries; Chattanooga is not the boondocks people! Just some insight into Long Island, from a “southerner’s” point of view.
“Encounter With a Thief”
From the day I moved to Long Island from my hometown of Chattanooga Tennessee, I have been fighting a losing battle. Oh, I plan to win and I will not give up; I just have to learn my opponent. The thing is; I feel that he has more intelligence than I do right now. I am not a sophisticated, worldly being. Oh, I know how to don a fancy dress, I listen to classical music and I know which fork to use; but I see things on a simplistic basis and I am afraid that in New York, even the raccoons have been around the block a time or two more than I have.
