Show The Love Valentine Competition 2012

Love is all around us in many shapes and forms, and this Valentine’s Day a special competition will give local artists and budding artists-to-be a chance to show what love means to them in the way of the time-honored tradition of the Valentine.

“Show the Love Valentine Competition,” sponsored by Think Long Island First, will give entrants the chance to win the heart of an admirer on this special day — and maybe walk away with the grand prize in the contest as well.

A Local Love Story, Brought To You By The Inn At Bowman’s Hill

Love is in the air this holiday season!  Read Danielle and Craig Barber’s beautiful local love story, brought to you by The Inn At Bowman’s Hill.

Craig and I met at Dowling College in September 2001, in the dorms at a lacrosse party.  I was sitting down on the couch and Craig happened to take a seat next to me.  Astonishingly enough, I immediately got up. (He enjoys telling this story)

Days went by, and I found out Craig was from Vancouver.  He transferred there from a junior college and became a baseball star at Dowling.  He was being awarded a full scholarship for baseball.  I had to admit it piqued my interest!  We became friends, and he would say cute things like how he loves my curly hair.  Needless to say, I never missed one of his baseball games.  We would always have lunch together before class, and then the inevitable happened.  (more…)

2011 Painted Pumpkin and Jack-o-Lantern Contest!

One of my favorite fall activities is pumpkin picking (have you seen our guide of where to go?); being in the field, searching for one that is not too tall, not too short, not too skinny or fat, but just right.  Why is my search so specific?  Because you need the perfect pumpkin to make…the perfect PAINTED PUMPKIN or JACK-O-LANTERN!

I am happy to announce the 2011 Boulder Creek Steakhouse and Nassau Happening online Jack-o-Lantern/Pumpkin Painting photo contest!! The contest will run from October 3 through October 31, 2011. We’ll post the images of your painted pumpkin or jack-o-lantern right here on the website and the Nassau Happening readers will get to choose their favorite. The jack-o-lantern or painted pumpkin with the most votes on the Nassau Happening website by 11:59pm on October 31 will be named Boulder Creek and Nassau Happening’s Best Pumpkin of Long Island 2011 and be awarded a $50 gift card to Boulder Creek Steakhouse of Hicksville or Brooklyn! Entrants must submit a photo of their jack-o-lantern or painted pumpkin, along with their contact information as required below to contest@nassauhappening.com. All entries must follow official rules and regulations, which are posted below. We will keep adding  jack-o-lanterns and painted pumpkins into the running as we receive them. You can vote once per day, so get your friends and family involved and tell them to vote!  GET CREATIVE AND ENTER NOW!

Beauty in Our Backyard: The Nassau County Museum of Art

While many trek to NYC for a glimpse at some beautiful artwork, we are lucky enough to only have to travel to Roslyn to the Nassau County Museum of Art.  Located on 145 acres in a three-story Georgian mansion, the museum has a permanent collection, the Art Space for Children, the Sculpture Park, a Formal Garden, walking trails, and an Art School.  The property was originally purchased in 1919 by Henry Clay Frick, who co-founded U.S. Steel, for his son.  Once he passed, Nassau County purchased the property and turned it into a museum.

What You Don’t Know About The LI Children’s Museum

Many of us have heard about it, some of us have visited it, and others don’t know a thing about it.  Here are the top 5 things you didn’t (but should!) know about the Long Island Children’s Museum.

1. There’s a reason kids love the place.  Not only is it a hands-on museum where kids can learn, play, and have fun while participating in hands-on activities, but the topics they cover are definitely interesting to kids.  Take for example the “Grossology” exhibit, running now until September 4.  With 17 interactive learning stations, kids can learn the whys and hows of the human body.  Why does your nose run?  Why do we smell stinky?  How does our body make oozy and stinky things that people thing are gross?  If you are still reading this, then your stomach is strong enough to visit the exhibit and find out the answers.

2. More interested in the arts side of things?  The LICM has a theater aspect, with a calendar of events ranging from topics like story time, the circus, pottery, juggling, healthy living, painting, and more.  Click here to see the complete calendar and descriptions.

3. Not all of the learning takes place inside the museum.  The “Our Backyard” outdoor exhibit encourages children to use their senses to discover the outside world.  Visitors observe and study plants, weather, animals, soil, and other natural features in an environment that inspires creativity, questioning, and a great time. Copper Mike Brings Out the Artistry of Bikes

Copper Mike with Deborah, who runs the business with him, and their assistant Terence Musto at the Foodies for a Cause Event

One of the great things about Long Island is that you never know who you are going to run into.  For example, I did not know that Mike Cole, Contractors for Kids Charity supporter, was actually “Copper Mike,” someone featured on HD Discovery Channel’s “Two Wheel Thunder” and known for creating one of a kind handmade motorcycles with high-performance value, impeccable attention to detail, and a combination of vintage and contemporary components that make each bike unique.

Copper Mike grew up in Bethpage and now lives in Massapequa.  His shop, Gravesend Cycles, is located in Lindenhurst, but you may have seen some of his designs at various charity events, high end boutiques (like Atrium in NYC or Miami), or featured in various hotels and casinos as a timeless piece of artwork.  I met up with Mike this week to talk about how he got started, his creative process, and what the future holds for Gravesend Cycles.
*Note: As of May 24, Copper Mike’s bike “Precious Metals” (pictures below) and some other pieces were featured at Lady Gaga’s CD Release at a NYC Best Buy!   (more…)
