This Sunday, May 20th, join the Long Island Children’s Museum for their annual NanoDay at LICM! Kids can try fun scientific experiments that explore the super small! NanoDays is a nationwide educational project focused on nano-scale science and engineering sponsored by the NISE Network (Nanoscale Informal Science Education). Check out this fascinating new science from buckyballs to waterproof sand! (more…)

Love is all around us in many shapes and forms, and this Valentine’s Day a special competition will give local artists and budding artists-to-be a chance to show what love means to them in the way of the time-honored tradition of the Valentine.
“Show the Love Valentine Competition,” sponsored by Think Long Island First, will give entrants the chance to win the heart of an admirer on this special day — and maybe walk away with the grand prize in the contest as well.

Craig and I met at Dowling College in September 2001, in the dorms at a lacrosse party. I was sitting down on the couch and Craig happened to take a seat next to me. Astonishingly enough, I immediately got up. (He enjoys telling this story)
Days went by, and I found out Craig was from Vancouver. He transferred there from a junior college and became a baseball star at Dowling. He was being awarded a full scholarship for baseball. I had to admit it piqued my interest! We became friends, and he would say cute things like how he loves my curly hair. Needless to say, I never missed one of his baseball games. We would always have lunch together before class, and then the inevitable happened. (more…)

While there are many spots you can intentionally visit to get spooked and scared on Long Island (click here for a list of them), there are several locations you may visit that you may not know have been reported sights of paranormal activity. Here is a list of the top haunted spots on LI:
1. Raynham Hall, Oyster Bay
Originally home to the Townsends of Oyster Bay, this now museum was once a place that housed British troops. Legend has it that British Major John Andre had a conversation in the house trying to convince Benedict Arnold to surrender his troops. People have reported that they have seen his image there. There have also been reports that one particular bedroom is especially chilling, and this was the room that one of his mistresses stayed in. Many say there is a distinct smell of apple and cinnamon in the kitchen, indicating that the spirit is welcoming you into the home. Several photographs taken here also show significant orbs, said to be indicators of spirits caught on film. (more…)

Watch out MOMS! The “Daddy Bloggers” are here!
Daddy blogs are on the rise. It is not just mothers chatting anymore, it’s the men now too. Maybe the day is coming that the blog-him show will give the blog-her show a little friendly competition? I often search websites and blogs pertaining to fatherhood for my own selfish needs, and through researching different sites, blogs and twitter accounts I realized that in the past year, men, specifically fathers, are posting about their lives more and more. Search and you will find Dads are popping up all over as new dads, adoptive dads, dads of daughters, single dads, divorced dads, religious dads, working dads and the quickly growing community of stay at home dads. It is a fast growing community. (more…)
