One of my favorite holiday activities is driving around, looking at holiday lights. Everyone loves to see the decorations, whether they be simple and elegant or lavish and crazy! What better way to share that holiday cheer than with the 2011 Holiday Lights Contest!
The contest will run from December 1 through December 29, 2011. We’ll post the images of your holiday lights right here on the website as well as on our Facebook page, and the Nassau Happening readers will get to choose their favorite. The photo with the most “likes” on the Nassau Happening Facebook page by 11:59pm on December 29 will be named Nassau Happening’s Best Holiday Lights of Long Island 2011 and be awarded (more…)

It’s Friday after work (or Thursday, or Wednesday, or really, any day since it’s summer) and you’re going out for drinks. We all know the conversation includes some combination of the following: Where are we going?, There’s nowhere to go, I want to sit outside, I’m not traveling far, I don’t want to go out east. Tired of hearing this myself, Nassau Happening brings you its Summer Happy Hour Guide! Drink responsibly-outdoors!-close to home any night of the week at the following places.

It is finally getting GORGEOUS outside, and there is no need to travel to find some wonderful treasures that Nassau has to offer. Here is Nassau Happening’s guide to the top 10 spots to visit this spring and summer.
1. Old Bethpage Village Restoration-Visit a living history museum, where a mid-19th century Long Island rural village is re-created for you. The general store, inn, farm, blacksmith shop, school, and villager’s houses (to name only a few) are kept so that visitors get a true sense of what it was like to live on LI long ago. Staff dress the part, too, and tell stories of what their typical day would have been like. There is a lot of walking, though, so wear sneakers! Kids love the farm especially, where they keep live animals, but adults will enjoy the tales of long ago just as much. (Insider tip: Don’t miss their Civil War re-enactment and Old-Time Baseball Games both taking place in July! See our community calendar for dates and times.)
