One of my favorite holiday activities is driving around, looking at holiday lights. Everyone loves to see the decorations, whether they be simple and elegant or lavish and crazy! What better way to share that holiday cheer than with the 2011 Holiday Lights Contest!
The contest will run from December 1 through December 29, 2011. We’ll post the images of your holiday lights right here on the website as well as on our Facebook page, and the Nassau Happening readers will get to choose their favorite. The photo with the most “likes” on the Nassau Happening Facebook page by 11:59pm on December 29 will be named Nassau Happening’s Best Holiday Lights of Long Island 2011 and be awarded (more…)
Irene can’t stop the surfers! From September 1-15, Long Beach will host the 2011 Quiksilver Pro New York Surf Competition. Why is this event such a big deal? For one, there has never been a world championship surfing event in New York, and it has been more than 20 years since a professional surf tournament has taken place on the US’s east coast. To be a surfer in NY, you need to have passion; how else could you brave the far from ideal conditions year ’round for the perfect surfing weather that comes only for a short time at the end of the summer? Who knows when the competition will be back here?! With a prize purse of $1,000,000 and a ton of events taking place each day, it’s a definite must-see.
The event starts on September 1 at 8 am with the Quiksilver Pro Trials. On September 2 at 9 am, the official Kickoff party begins. There are a variety of events each day that you can attend at various locations throughout Long Beach. Some highlights are (more…)

On Friday night, Ooh La La hosted their second annual runway benefit Glitz Glamour Groove Give at the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach. Fans of the 5 store chain boutique came early to mingle and enjoy cocktails courtesy of Fragoli Liquor at the brand new Jacks on the Rocks rooftop lounge of the hotel. Once the show started, the crowd went wild for the unique and stylish fashions modeled beautifully by Long Island locals. All proceeds benefit Habitat Suffolk Women Build for Habitat for Humanity, which plans to start building a house in Bellport for a family of four. It was my first time visiting the hotel and meeting Ooh La La employees, and I have to admit that I was floored by the friendly and helpful staff of both groups. If you missed the event, view our Flickr album below of attendees and the runway show. (more…)

Who doesn’t love a fashion show? Unfortunately for us mere mortals, no one at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is reserving us front row seats. You can, however, feel like a VIP rock star this Friday night at the Ooh La La Runway Benefit, appropriately titled Glitz Glamour Groove Give. Held at the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach and hosted by 106.1 WBLI’s Astra, Ooh La La Boutiqes will have a runway show at the hotel’s new rooftop pool lounge Jacks on the Rocks. The show will feature three distinct collections: Central Park Chic, Downtown Rebel, and Sun ‘n’ Fun. Feel good about mingling and drinking specialty cocktails courtesy of Fragoli (an Italian wild strawberry liqueur), since the boutiques are working closely with Habitat for Humanity. Their goal is to bring awareness to their newest venture: replacing their stilettos for hard hats and tool belts to support Habitat Suffolk Women Build, which will build a house in Bellport for a family of four this fall. After the show, stay for the after party: DJ Freqnik will keep you entertained while you enter raffles and dance the night away. (more…)

It’s a story that may seem familiar to many young boys: they have trouble meeting girls, and their father instructs them that the way to help is to do very well in school or learn to dance. In this story, the young boy decided to do really well in school. When that was not producing the results he wanted, he decided to try his hand at dancing. Joining the Cornell Ballroom Dance team in college, he wasn’t the star at first (“I was very bad” he says), but he stuck with it. Such is the story of Alfred Pena, founder of Rhythmology.
